Is Feng Shui really friendly for all genders? Feng Shui is a Chinese metaphysical art of living in harmony with the environment and harnessing the energy of the living space for the well being of the residents within a property. The essence of Feng Shui is to activate the positive energy and eliminate the negative energy. It is important where your property is located relative to the mountains and the rivers…

There are environmental factors that we need to consider when checking a property or site for Feng Shui compliance. The external landforms such as rivers, waterways, roads, lakes, hills, mountains or rises in the land does play an important role in Feng Shui. A property that is aligned with these landforms in the correct location and direction is deemed auspicious and the people living in such a property will enjoy harmony and prosperity. Likewise, a property that is misaligned in relations to these landforms is considered inauspicious and residents will suffer misfortune and bad luck.

A property is categorized under three cycles and nine periods based on Feng Shui San Yuan formula. There are the upper cycle, middle cycle and lower cycle. Each cycle governs three periods and each period last for twenty years. Therefore, a cycle will run for 60 years before the next cycle takes over.

The current period is known as Period Eight which started in Feb 2004 and will expire in Feb 2023. In this period, there are certain compass directions a property should comply with based on the Indirect/Direct Spirit Feng Shui Formula as follows:-

Indirect Spirits – Southwest, East, Southeast and North

Direct Spirits – Northeast, West, Northwest and South

The formula specifies that a property should have its front facing the Indirect Spirit and its rear facing the Direct Spirit. The Indirect Spirit is a compass direction for the location of water in the vicinity whereas the Direct Spirit is a compass direction for location of hills and mountains in the distance.

For instance, if the front of a property is facing a lake or river in the Southwest and has its rear looking towards a mountain in the Northeast, it is said to comply with the Indirect/Direct Spirit Formula. The property can tap into the auspicious energies which bring health, relationship and money luck to the residents. On the other hand, a property which faces a mountain in front with its rear end pointing towards a lake is said to violate the Indirect/Direct Spirit Formula. Residents will not enjoy good luck and tend to face obstacles and challenges in their life.

This is only one of the fundamental factors in Feng Shui with regards to landforms. It is a matter of Yin and Yang. Yang relates to the Indirect Spirit and Yin the Direct Spirit. Ideally, a property should face Yang and sits Yin. Yang is the side of the property where there is most noise, activity and brightness whereas Yin is the side of the property where there is peace, stillness and dimness. Likewise, Water is Yang and mountain is Yin. When water and mountain are at their correct compass directions in relations to a property based on the Indirect/Direct Spirit formula, Yin and Yang is said to be in balance.

Apart from the above formula, there are other Feng Shui formulas which relates to the interior of a property, namely Flying Stars and Eight Mansion, to name the more popular ones. These Feng Shui formulas allow residents to map out the energy distribution within a property based on the facing direction (Flying Stars) and sitting direction (Eight Mansion) respectively. It is equally important that a person’s date and time of birth be taken into consideration so that the energy of the property is correctly aligned with the resident’s energy or life force. We spend the good part of our lives in our bedroom doing a variety of things but most importantly sleeping. We are at our most vulnerable when sleeping therefore our bedroom needs to be safe, secure, and intimate.To help you achieve harmony in your bedroom, which will lead to positive effects in other aspects of your life, I have compiled a list of tips to follow to Feng Shui your bedroom.

1.It is ideal to choose your bedroom in the room furthest away from the front door. On a subliminal level, this gives you the extra feeling of protection, stability and security. They say that the worst possible place is to have your bedroom facing or close to the front door, however being realistic, sometimes you don’t have much choice- so follow the other tips I have listed and do the best with the space you have.

2.To create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere paint your bedroom neutral colors such as terracotta, cream or peach, colors like light blue, green or lavender will create a tranquil vibe and invite healing energy. If you are looking to spice up your love life stick with pinks and reds, which will increase the romance in your life, although limit the use of such color to slight accents; bright color such as red, or orange, yellow etc, are often associated with Yang which can be too stimulating for the bedroom.

3.Position your bed as far away from the door as possible and out of the direct line of the door. Avoid putting it under a window, which lacks the symbolic support and protection of a solid wall and can lead to fitful sleep as energy enters and exits through the window. Invest in a wooden headboard as it can provide strength and support to your head.
Whatever you do, make sure your feet don’t point out the door while in bed. In traditional Chinese culture, this is called the "Death Position" because the deceased are carried out feet first. Practitioners believe sleeping this way can drain your life force. If you can’t avoid it, use a foot board or a substantial trunk or other piece of furniture at the foot of your bed. Finally, leave enough room around the bed for energy to flow freely, and for each partner to get up with ease. Always use curves not corners, sharp corners on bedroom furniture act as ‘poison arrows’ directing positive energy away from you and creating an uneasy environment. 4.De-clutter! Clutter in your bedroom prevents the free-flowing of Chi. However, don’t solve the problem by putting everything under the bed. This will block energy and lead to stagnation in life. Consider the objects that you have in your room, remove any work related items, and any objects that hold past memories that are best forgotten; as teddy bears from a past relationship.

5.Tip: Place a plant in the corner of your room to prevent energy stagnating there and increase the Zen by limiting what’s on your night stand to a lamp, a couple of inspirational books, a picture you love and a plant or fresh flowers.

6.Remove items such as TVs, exercise equipment and computers, they take up a lot of energy and can distract you from rest and romance. Further to this although having a few books placed on your nightstand can encourage your Zen, having shelves loaded with books all calling out to be read and thus distracting you from rest. If you must have these items in you room then it is best to use a screen to hide them whilst sleeping or keep your television set in a cupboard so that it can all be shut out.

7.If your single and wish to be partnered up then decorate your room as if you already are; place side tables and lamps on both side of the bed. Accessorize in pairs and ensure that everything is symmetrical. For those already in a relationship consider the bed your love shrine, place loving items on the bedside tables such as a photograph (the photo should not be a family pic but of you and your partner), a pair of candles and a rounded (not spiky) leafed plantremember to place a few pink or red accent in and around the bed to encourage romance.

8.A common Feng Shui trick is to place pictures, art or items around the room that represent what you would like to see in your own lifesuch as inner peace, love or success. A carefully chosen piece of art can have an impact on your own personal achievements.

9.Do not to place a mirror opposite, next to, or over the bed. This will bounce too much energy around the room to allow for good rest, and will magnify problems and worriesand it is thought that mirrors in the bedroom can invite a third party to interfere in your relationship. The only cure to such a dilemma is to hang decorative material or curtains in front of the offensive mirror, cover them up when you retire for the night or if possible turn the mirror away from the bed.

10.Lighting is an important factor in Feng Shui, encourage natural light into your room by using blinds that can easily be opened in the morning encouraging the light and shut at night blocking out the dark. Balance light from a ceiling light with several low-lying lamps which will cast a softer glow across your room; calming the energy of the space down at night.

When a neighbor’s driveway points toward your front entrance, counter it by affixing a pa-k’ua mirror to the door. Pa-ku’a mirrors are usually available at Chinese gift stores. A pa-k’ua mirror can also be used against sharp, pointed objects directed at your house for instance, TV antennas, protruding tree branches, or spiky architectural features. Place a large mirror behind the stove so that you won’t be surprised when someone comes up behind you. Hang a mirror up at the end of a hallway so that it does not seem like a dead end. If the West section is missing in your home, you can install a bright light or a mirror to partially remedy this problem. You can also activate the West section of your bedroom as well. Do not sleep facing a mirror. The water element of the mirror will cause ill health. Avoid having any water feature in the bedroom such as aquariums, paintings of rivers and lakes, computers or televisions.

Avoid sleeping in a room where a toilet or washing machine is located upstairs. Sleeping underneath an exposed overhead beam will cause headaches, depending on where the beam ‘hits’.

Arrange furniture so you can face the doors while sitting. Make the environment much more comfortable by arranging seating areas away from drafts and adjusting lighting. Clean up clutter to encourage relaxation and help you to find things easier.

Widen the front walkway to your home to make it more inviting. Be sure paths between rooms and through rooms are wide and easy to use. This allows you to walk around easily, as well as promotes chi. Oil your doors so they don’t squeak, reducing mental irritation.

Fresh flowers will spread their fragrance all over so decorate flower vases with beautiful red roses and tulip flowers and place them at different corners in the house. One of the basic rules when decorating with feng shui is to make sure that the path of energy, whether good or bad, cannot flow through your home. This happens when windows are directly across from each other, or doors are directly in front of a window. When good energy flows through your home, you can have good luck one day and bad the next, since the good energy has just flown through. When bad energy flows through your home, it is believed to cause more than just bad luck, including death and pain. Although the bad energy can flow out of your home, it leaves its wrath and can be hard to fully get rid of.

To arrange furniture always start with an empty room. Once a room is empty, you can then fill it one piece at a time. You should begin with the larger pieces, like the couch, bed, television, etc. When placing each item, analyze whether the object is relevant to the area and whether people can flow through the room without running into anything. Ask yourself if you really need it in the room you are working on, or if it would better fit into another room, or if you should donate it, to goodwill. You do not have to put everything back into the room that you took out. Get rid of whatever you have left after arranging each room. This is considered clutter and can slow down your positive energy.
