Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of manipulating and arranging your surroundings to attract positive life energy, or chi, so that it flows smoothly, unblocking any obstructions in your body and environment.

The Origins of Feng Shui

The geography of China requires careful consideration when constructing and planning buildings as the mountain winds are unforgiving and the lower areas are prone to flooding, which gave the art its name of wind and water.

Feng Shui evolved from the theory that people are affected by their surroundings Feng Shui is a guide to, respecting our surroundings and working with the flow of nature to create a harmonious environment, making us feel better and derive more from life.

The origins of Feng Shui date back several thousand years and although it originated in China, it now has millions of devotees worldwide.

Feng Shui theory

Take an example such as air, If there is one quality within air that we are all naturally aware of, it is the presence of oxygen as we can’t live without it!

We all feel when we have exercised that our body is well oxygenated and our Chi, our spirit and mood, feels invigorated as a consequence.

Conversely, if we sit for a long time in a hot Smokey room or sleep in an unventilated one we, will feel tired, despondent and unenthusiastic. There are of course a huge amount of examples of how are environment influences our lives, of which the above is just one.

The flow of chi is influenced by a number of factors of the physical environment.

Colors, shapes, orientation, lighting, objects and their positions, the use of space, and the degree of cleanliness, all impact collectively upon our senses and determine a home’s energy flow.

This flow affects us continually and affects our moods. You spend most of your life in your home and workplace and your surroundings significantly influence your Chi and moods so you want them to have a positive impact.

Feng Shui makes our houses and our workspace generate positive energy, which then attracts more positive energy to enrich our lives for the better.

The purpose of feng shui

When you Feng Shui a home or a work place, you’re making a statement of what you want from your life.

Whenever you say the words "I am," you are making a statement about who you are at an exact moment in time.

Statements like "what you think about, you bring about," and "what you do comes back to you." underline what Feng shui is all about.

Instead of being negative Feng Shui focuses on the positive "I am feeling great", "I am in good health", "I am rich" or "I am happy."

These statements are mood lifting and create an ideal, which be different to whom you are at the moment.

This power of intention and the faith in your potential can help you get more from life.

If you’re intent on getting rid of negative beliefs, Feng Shui will create a method for you to adopt positive beliefs, in your personal space and a method to help make more positive things happen in your life.

Is Feng Shui certification for you

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Is Feng Shui certification for you? My answer is a definite… Maybe.

If you’re an avid reader, you can probably learn everything that you need to know from Feng Shui websites, and from recommended books such as the lighthearted "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life" and "Feng Shui in 5 Minutes," or more academic texts such as "Interior Design with Feng Shui."

However, if you’ve read Feng Shui books but still have important questions, or if you’d like to grow a career as a Feng Shui consultant or designer, Feng Shui training can be very important .

At the very least, it can open doors for you as a professional.

Try some basic Feng Shui courses

Start by checking local adult ed classes. Someone may be teaching Feng Shui for beginners, or a related class. Community colleges often offer Feng Shui courses in their architecture, art, or Asian studies programs.

Treat the course lightly. If the teacher insists that Compass School Feng Shui is the only correct approach, or that Black Hat Feng Shui is the answer to everything, nod and smile… but don’t take the teacher seriously.

There is some truth–and often considerable value–in every approach to Feng Shui. It’s vital to keep an open mind.

If you like Black Hat Feng Shui but your teacher prefers the Compass School, just think "Money Corner" when the teacher says, "Southeast corner," and think "Career Area" when the teacher says, "North wall."

The basic principles are the same in almost all approaches to Feng Shui. Some people get locked into "this is the only true path" views, but you don’t have to.

I tested Compass School Feng Shui for two years before returning to Black Hat Feng Shui. The latter works best for me and for my clients, but some of my friends insist that the Compass School offers a greater success rate than Black Hat.

Test everything yourself. Modify the rules and find what works best for you. Generally, you’ll attract clients who resonate to the same principles that have been successful in your home and office.

Graduate to Feng Shui certification

After trying a few Feng Shui classes, you may want to learn more, or qualify for Feng Shui certification.

Do plenty of research before selecting a Feng Shui school or teacher. Talk with former students. Verify the teachers’ credentials and reputations. Visit their websites. Have these teachers written books? Read them. (If they’re really good, your public library probably has copies. Or, you can get them on inter-library loan.)

Make certain that you’ll be studying with a professional… and with someone who has respected Feng Shui expertise.

Compare course prices. And, ask about the refund policy if you quickly realize that the school isn’t for you, after all.

Feng Shui certification can open doors, especially among architects, interior designers, and decorators. Many of them give added respect to professionals with formal training.

You can certainly practice Feng Shui without stepping into a classroom. And, you can build a successful Feng Shui business based on happy clients and word-of-mouth advertising.

However, if you’re looking for the fastest possible route to success with Feng Shui–especially as a professional–Feng Shui courses and certification may be a wise choice.

Getting Your Feng Shui Certification

Many people who sign up for feng shui classes are often not even certain about what feng shui is. A very common misconception about the practice is that the main function is to arrange furniture or houses so as to create a positive energy flow. This is not incorrect, but it is short-sighted and superficial when it comes to the ancient practice and deep historical function of feng shui in Chinese culture. The literal translation of feng shui into English is "wind water." While this might not be clear in and of itself, this quote from Gua Pu of the Jin Dynasty does help clear things up: "Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water."

What does this mean in terms of our lives? Well, to begin with, feng shui is a manner in which one can create balance and connection between the heavens and the earth. Usually those elements take the form of astronomy and geography. The historic use of feng shui was to determine the appropriate places for homes, agriculture, and burial sites. Is this what you’re going to learn in feng shui training today? Well, probably not. Current western traditions of feng shui focus on how we can bring this positive channeling of Qi or energy into our lives to create prosperity, health, and strong personal relationships.

The manner in which one would most likely learn this in a feng shui certification training course is twofold: by clearing the energy of a space and by placing objects in a manner that assists a positive flow. How might one use this certification? Well, obviously there are the personal implications. As with any skill set learned, especially one that has the healing properties and the ability to affect one’s personal life, you must first use it on yourself. Find you cannot focus in your home office? Well, it’s time to learn how to remedy that. Beyond simply getting your life in order, it also can add to or create a lucrative professional career for you.

For people in the home design industry, what better way to improve your resume and your skill set than adding feng shui certification to it? Even just taking a few feng shui classes is a great way to start building on skills that will assist you in your current career. Of course, this doesn’t just apply to people already in the business of decorating other people’s homes. People who work as life coaches and healers can also benefit from feng shui training. After all, treating a person is a holistic measure, and if they are in a space that is holding them back, no matter how much progress they make emotionally and spiritually, they will still be held back. All in all, there is really no one out there who wouldn’t benefit from knowledge of feng shui.

Feng Shui Tips for Better Health

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Feng shui is often seen in the Western world as an esoteric practice, concerned with the magical placement of certain items to gain wealth or accumulate power. But the truth is, feng shui is based on very simple ideas that you can easily use to improve your life.

Correct observation of the principals of feng shui can indeed increase your prosperity, enhance your relationships, and even help you improve your own health and the health of your family. Here are some of the very simple ways that feng shui can create an environment that fosters good health, rather than draining energy that leaves you open and vulnerable to disease.

Here are some simple ways that you can use feng shui to promote good health in your home today:

· Eliminate clutter in your home. Clutter blocks the flow of positive energy in your living space and leaves you feeling drained and tired. Your home should be an open, neatly organized space where you feel safe and secure. Clutter impedes this feeling of security, instead creating an environment of chaos.

Quite simply, if you do not need, want, use or love an object within your home, get rid of it. Give it to a friend or family member, donate it to charity, or simply throw it away. As you eliminate items that no longer have any use for you, the energy in your home will improve dramatically.

· Make sure that your home is clean. Like clutter, uncleanliness in your home creates a depressive, draining environment where positive energy and good health cannot exist.

For many of us, one of the biggest obstacles to having a clean home is admitting to ourselves that we do not have time to handle everything. Working full time, raising children, and fulfilling social obligations take up an overwhelming part of our time and energy. At the end of the day, many of us simply do not have time to clean.

If this sounds like you, one of the most important steps you can take is to admit to yourself that you need help, and give yourself permission to bring in someone to help you clean. It is okay to not be able to handle everything. Once you give yourself this permission, hiring someone to help keep your house clean will do wonders for your energy and your health.

· Be mindful of electromagnetic fields. Every electronic device in your home emits electromagnetic fields, which suppress your immune system. By minimizing the number of electronic devices in your living space, you will eliminate much of this negative energy.

This is particularly true with your bedroom, because this is where your body heals and repairs itself. Make sure that all electronic devices, such as digital alarm clocks, televisions, and stereos are at least three feet away from your bed. Also, if you have a television or stereo in your bedroom, it is a good idea to keep it in a cabinet that can be shut while you are sleeping at night.

By paying attention to the energy in your home and how it is affecting you and following the simple recommendations above, you can dramatically improve your health and any other areas of your life as well.
