The Yin and Yang of Feng Shui

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Is Feng Shui really friendly for all genders? While there is no question to the fact that it can invite some positive vibes into your home just by the mere art of rearranging your furniture and the orientations of your surroundings, it may actually reveal so much more about culture if one takes a good look at it.

For one thing, the Yin and Yang illustration is a very famous facet of Feng Shui. It simply states that opposites are necessary to be able to appreciate the beauty of things. You cannot appreciate the good without bad, light without darkness and so on. This theory of opposites and balance extends to the elements of the earth: water, wind, fire, wood and earth. These elements are also in balance if good Feng Shui is present.

yin and yangYin is often characterized with strength, viability and aggressiveness. More importantly, it is attributed to the masculine side of identity. On the other hand, weakness and femininity are interchangeably attributed to the Yang side, the softer side of things. Is this really a good thing? While it has been maintained that it is a world for the masculine, the main precepts of Feng Shui are actually more tailored to suit male, establishing them as the strong ones in the spectrum of life.

The Feng Shui concept is already organized in its scope. Any person you ask about Feng Shui may tell you its symbols: the bagua, the yin and yang diagram and the charms used by Feng Shui experts to cancel bad luck. However, the main concepts are not entirely original. The philosopher Heraclitus from Greece is credited for having first denoted the concept of having opposites. And consequently, psychology on colors and other visual media can also state some theories that are resonant with Feng Shui precepts.

feng shui secretsInterestingly, there are more women drawn to the Feng Shui habit than men, who may or may not be conscious that they are actually supporting a form of belief system that establishes males as strong and females as weak. But other than the Yin –Yang concept, there is no other outward manifestation of this gender bias.

Is it really a good thing to believe in Feng Shui and apply it? The answer is relative. It depends on the person who is asking and the background under which he or she is raised. If you are born in an open-minded culture which holds less restrictions on what you can and cannot do, the applying of Feng Shui may be a non-issue. Meanwhile, if you are under a movement that opposes the main beliefs of Feng Shui, you may have to make a more substantial choice of lifestyle changes.

Harness the power of Feng Shui to create great RICHES and SUCCESS Today!

Feng Shui also has its own Yin and Yang to speak of. If you are really intent on ruminating on the deeper aspects of Feng Shui, you may have to dig deeper beyond what you see on promotional materials and even hate literature against Feng Shui. For the most part, Feng Shui is quite harmless in nature and it does not really explicitly cause major changes in one’s lifestyles or belief systems.

But if in case you choose to be more meticulous, you may find that analyzing beneath the layers of promotion of Feng Shui that there is more to it than just rearranging furniture.

Feng Shui and Clutter an Essential Tip to Know

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Basic Facts About Feng Shui
The Chinese words Feng Shui literally mean (Feng) Wind and (Shui) Water. This highlights the emphasis of Feng Shui which put great reference to the nature, the environment and the surrounding.

declutter your homeIn fact, Feng Shui has little or no connection with religion although Feng Shui is sometimes also being mistaken as part of Taoism. It is not, although they do have some similarities in certain theories about luck and environment. Feng Shui is in fact a study of the natural elements that can affect our life, health, relationship and wealth.

If you dig deep into the Feng Shui applications, they focus very much on the placement of the elements in your surrounding. A comprehensive and effective Feng Shui application focus on the placement of furniture, the design of the layouts and all things that enhance the physical and natural environment.

However, some Feng Shui practitioners use a lot of Chinese ornaments as Feng Shui cures and enhancements; this is because the application was influenced by Chinese Culture as it was originated from China more than four thousands year ago.

feng shui trainingIn China, due to the Cultural Revolution that suppressed many ancient Chinese beliefs for decades, Feng Shui was almost lost to the world. Thankfully, there were many Feng Shui enthusiasts and practitioners who escaped from China during the Cultural Revolution and they were able to pass on most of the Feng Shui knowledge and application through the generations. Thus, do not be surprised if you observed that the Chinese in China do not know as much about Feng Shui or practice the Feng Shui application as much as the Chinese outside China.

It is common knowledge that our environments have a great impact on our lives. Feng Shui is the Chinese’s ancient way of understanding that influence. Thus, understanding of Feng Shui and the correct re-arranging of Feng Shui elements can lead to an improvement of our life, health, relationship and wealth.

An Essential Feng Shui Tip
“Get Rid of Clutter” – Almost every good Feng Shui class or seminar would say it so. Ever wonder why? That’s because it’s the truth. The basic premise of Feng Shui is that your life experience, even the extent of your luck – is influenced by your surroundings. At the same time, the state of your home or workspace is a reflection of your mood and attitude.

feng shui trainingA simple tip which Feng Shui masters will never tell you as it is just too obvious. This is one tip which they will not tell you when you ask them (at fees costing up to thousands of dollars) to Feng Shui your home or office. Why? Because your home or office would be tidy and neat on such a day. Isn’t it so?

Many a times, Feng Shui tips are as simple as keeping your homes or offices neat and tidy. Getting Rid of Clutter is the most important way to dramatically improve the Feng Shui of your home.

It’s a Feng Shui tip that many take for granted. They rather spend lots of money buying Feng Shui ornaments which ironically add to the clutter in their homes and offices,
only to realise that their lucks are still as bad (if not, worse off than before) and then they blame it on Feng Shui and said that Feng Shui doesn’t work. Keep in mind that Feng Shui when applied in the wrong way can have adverse effects. So, please do not over do in terms of buying and placement of Feng Shui ornaments.

feng shui trainingWith clutter, most people cannot think clearly as they always looking for things among the mess. Imagine being feeling happy and good when your minds are always on finding things among the stacks of mess at home or in your office.

Think about this for a while.

You may heard about "Chi" (the flow of energy) and Feng Shui. Clutters basically affect the Chi, and thus your luck. Clutter creates bad Chi flow because it prevents good Chi from flowing within your environments.

Clear the clutter and you clear the space for good Chi to flow, which is much better than placement of any Feng Shui ornaments, to kick-start the good Feng Shui in your environment.

If there is one tip that you want to take away from reading this article, that will be:
Before you rush out to buy any Feng Shui ornaments, start with clearing up your clutter.
Get rid of the mess and you get rid some of the bad Chi (and some bad luck…)

Feng Shui – The Spirit of Landforms

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Feng Shui is a Chinese metaphysical art of living in harmony with the environment and harnessing the energy of the living space for the well being of the residents within a property. The essence of Feng Shui is to activate the positive energy and eliminate the negative energy. It is important where your property is located relative to the mountains and the rivers…

There are environmental factors that we need to consider when checking a property or site for Feng Shui compliance. The external landforms such as rivers, waterways, roads, lakes, hills, mountains or rises in the land does play an important role in Feng Shui. A property that is aligned with these landforms in the correct location and direction is deemed auspicious and the people living in such a property will enjoy harmony and prosperity. Likewise, a property that is misaligned in relations to these landforms is considered inauspicious and residents will suffer misfortune and bad luck.

A property is categorized under three cycles and nine periods based on Feng Shui San Yuan formula. There are the upper cycle, middle cycle and lower cycle. Each cycle governs three periods and each period last for twenty years. Therefore, a cycle will run for 60 years before the next cycle takes over.

feng shui house

The current period is known as Period Eight which started in Feb 2004 and will expire in Feb 2023. In this period, there are certain compass directions a property should comply with based on the Indirect/Direct Spirit Feng Shui Formula as follows:-

Indirect Spirits – Southwest, East, Southeast and North

Direct Spirits – Northeast, West, Northwest and South

The formula specifies that a property should have its front facing the Indirect Spirit and its rear facing the Direct Spirit. The Indirect Spirit is a compass direction for the location of water in the vicinity whereas the Direct Spirit is a compass direction for location of hills and mountains in the distance.

For instance, if the front of a property is facing a lake or river in the Southwest and has its rear looking towards a mountain in the Northeast, it is said to comply with the Indirect/Direct Spirit Formula. The property can tap into the auspicious energies which bring health, relationship and money luck to the residents. On the other hand, a property which faces a mountain in front with its rear end pointing towards a lake is said to violate the Indirect/Direct Spirit Formula. Residents will not enjoy good luck and tend to face obstacles and challenges in their life.

feng shui office

This is only one of the fundamental factors in Feng Shui with regards to landforms. It is a matter of Yin and Yang. Yang relates to the Indirect Spirit and Yin the Direct Spirit. Ideally, a property should face Yang and sits Yin. Yang is the side of the property where there is most noise, activity and brightness whereas Yin is the side of the property where there is peace, stillness and dimness. Likewise, Water is Yang and mountain is Yin. When water and mountain are at their correct compass directions in relations to a property based on the Indirect/Direct Spirit formula, Yin and Yang is said to be in balance.

Apart from the above formula, there are other Feng Shui formulas which relates to the interior of a property, namely Flying Stars and Eight Mansion, to name the more popular ones. These Feng Shui formulas allow residents to map out the energy distribution within a property based on the facing direction (Flying Stars) and sitting direction (Eight Mansion) respectively. It is equally important that a person’s date and time of birth be taken into consideration so that the energy of the property is correctly aligned with the resident’s energy or life force. In Chinese Astrology known as Four Pillars of Destiny, a property with good Feng Shui can help to enhance or mitigate the effects of any positive or negative luck cycles a person is going through in order to live a happy and successful life.

Top 10 Tips To Feng Shui Your Bedroom.

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Top 10 Tips To Feng Shui Your Bedroom.

We spend the good part of our lives in our bedroom doing a variety of things but most importantly sleeping. We are at our most vulnerable when sleeping therefore our bedroom needs to be safe, secure, and intimate. To help you achieve harmony in your bedroom, which will lead to positive effects in other aspects of your life, I have compiled a list of tips to follow to Feng Shui your bedroom.

1.It is ideal to choose your bedroom in the room furthest away from the front door. On a subliminal level, this gives you the extra feeling of protection, stability and security. They say that the worst possible place is to have your bedroom facing or close to the front door, however being realistic, sometimes you don’t have much choice- so follow the other tips I have listed and do the best with the space you have.

2.To create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere paint your bedroom neutral colors such as terracotta, cream or peach, colors like light blue, green or lavender will create a tranquil vibe and invite healing energy. If you are looking to spice up your love life stick with pinks and reds, which will increase the romance in your life, although limit the use of such color to slight accents; bright color such as red, or orange, yellow etc, are often associated with Yang which can be too stimulating for the bedroom.

3.Position your bed as far away from the door as possible and out of the direct line of the door. Avoid putting it under a window, which lacks the symbolic support and protection of a solid wall and can lead to fitful sleep as energy enters and exits through the window. Invest in a wooden headboard as it can provide strength and support to your head.
Whatever you do, make sure your feet don’t point out the door while in bed. In traditional Chinese culture, this is called the "Death Position" because the deceased are carried out feet first. Practitioners believe sleeping this way can drain your life force. If you can’t avoid it, use a foot board or a substantial trunk or other piece of furniture at the foot of your bed. Finally, leave enough room around the bed for energy to flow freely, and for each partner to get up with ease. Always use curves not corners, sharp corners on bedroom furniture act as ‘poison arrows’ directing positive energy away from you and creating an uneasy environment. To alleviate this drape fabric over the sharp edges to create fluidity.

4.De-clutter! Clutter in your bedroom prevents the free-flowing of Chi. However, don’t solve the problem by putting everything under the bed. This will block energy and lead to stagnation in life. Consider the objects that you have in your room, remove any work related items, and any objects that hold past memories that are best forgotten; as teddy bears from a past relationship.

5.Tip: Place a plant in the corner of your room to prevent energy stagnating there and increase the Zen by limiting what’s on your night stand to a lamp, a couple of inspirational books, a picture you love and a plant or fresh flowers.

6.Remove items such as TVs, exercise equipment and computers, they take up a lot of energy and can distract you from rest and romance. Further to this although having a few books placed on your nightstand can encourage your Zen, having shelves loaded with books all calling out to be read and thus distracting you from rest. If you must have these items in you room then it is best to use a screen to hide them whilst sleeping or keep your television set in a cupboard so that it can all be shut out.

bedroom feng shui

7.If your single and wish to be partnered up then decorate your room as if you already are; place side tables and lamps on both side of the bed. Accessorize in pairs and ensure that everything is symmetrical. For those already in a relationship consider the bed your love shrine, place loving items on the bedside tables such as a photograph (the photo should not be a family pic but of you and your partner), a pair of candles and a rounded (not spiky) leafed plantremember to place a few pink or red accent in and around the bed to encourage romance.

8.A common Feng Shui trick is to place pictures, art or items around the room that represent what you would like to see in your own lifesuch as inner peace, love or success. A carefully chosen piece of art can have an impact on your own personal achievements.

9.Do not to place a mirror opposite, next to, or over the bed. This will bounce too much energy around the room to allow for good rest, and will magnify problems and worriesand it is thought that mirrors in the bedroom can invite a third party to interfere in your relationship. The only cure to such a dilemma is to hang decorative material or curtains in front of the offensive mirror, cover them up when you retire for the night or if possible turn the mirror away from the bed.

10.Lighting is an important factor in Feng Shui, encourage natural light into your room by using blinds that can easily be opened in the morning encouraging the light and shut at night blocking out the dark. Balance light from a ceiling light with several low-lying lamps which will cast a softer glow across your room; calming the energy of the space down at night.

The Origins of Feng Shui

The geography of China requires careful consideration when constructing and planning buildings as the mountain winds are unforgiving and the lower areas are prone to flooding, which gave the art its name of wind and water.

Feng Shui Classes

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Every school year parents and students dutifully trudge through the malls in search of the perfect sneaker or the cool new outfit for the coming school year. However, it’s unlikely that the new shoe or shirt will benefit them as much as a new design in the bedroom. That’s because a bedroom makeover will create new interest and energy – what feng shui calls ‘chi’ – in the bedroom that will benefit a child.

According to feng shui, the Chinese technique for design and arrangement, rooms that have good energy, or ‘chi’, create happier, well-adjusted children. Feng shui theories suggest that for a child’s room to have good ‘chi,’ the room must follow certain guidelines such as that they must be restful, promote good relationships others and generate good self-esteem. Perhaps most importantly, harmonious children’s bedrooms encourage good study habits and promote greater success in school.

What does it take to promote greater success in school? According to feng shui, the following seven tips are key to creating rooms that inspire kids to study.

1. The room has a desk.
It sounds obvious, but many kids’ only workspace is either a bed, the bedroom floor, or the family dining table. Every child needs a suitable study area in the bedroom that includes a desk, chair, and a lamp. Children with study areas are more likely to study. Better still, having a study area keeps all the school books and papers confined to the child’s room. Feng shui also believes it’s best for children to study facing the northeast, the direction of wisdom and learning.

2. Ground your kids.
Buy your kids a globe to promote interest in geography and to help ‘ground’ them and encourage them to study. Add a globe in the Northeast corner of the bedroom, if possible.

3. Create an achievement corner.
Every child needs to have recognition for a job well done. A perfect way to gain this is to create an achievement corner on the South wall of the bedroom. According to feng shui, this is the recognition area and is a good place to pin up awards, papers with good grades, letters of recommendation, ribbons or trophies.

4. Hang a crystal in the Northeast corner of the room.
Crystals are used to make computer chips faster. Hang a crystal in the study location to create more ’study’ chi and to help sharpen the child’s ability to ‘process’ or think!

5. Put your child in the command position.
Avoid having children face a wall when studying because this represents an obstacle. They should be able to see the door when someone enters.

6. Display maps and other educational artwork.
Maps are another way to ground educational pursuits. They encourage ‘worldly’ interest and curiosity and they make suitable images for a child’s room. Avoid scary creatures, pictures depicting violence, or sad or dark subjects.

7. Eliminate TV from the bedroom.
Sadly many of today’s children have TVs in their bedrooms. This is a feng shui no-no because it can make children much less likely to study and rest fully. If your child doesn’t study as much as you would like and has a TV in the bedroom, ask yourself what is more important: television or school?

8. Shells and fish are symbols of education.
Conch shells and koi or goldfish are excellent symbols of educational success. Place the conch shell in the Northeast corner of the bedroom. Or, hang a picture of koi or goldfish in the Northeast corner. It is not recommended to keep live fish in the bedroom as water in the bedroom is associated with loss.

Feng Shui – The Fire Element

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

When (and when not to) use the colour red in Feng Shui

The color red in Feng Shui represents the Fire element. It is the elemental property of the flying star no. 9. The five-element theory is the fundamental base theory in Chinese Metaphysical Studies, one of which being Feng Shui. This theory explains the relationship between the qi of almost anything material and abstract that exists in the Universe.

Based on this theory, the colour red, which represents the Fire element, produces or feeds the Earth element, controls Metal, drains Wood and exhausts Water. Xuan Kong Feng Shui, or Flying Stars Feng Shui, is a detailed study of qi within living spaces. It takes into account direction, space and time.

In this period of time that we live in , which is between 2004 and 2023, the most auspicious star happens to be star no. 8, which is the Earth element. This star is located in a part of the house which you can find using the calculator and instructions on my website. Since this star no. 8 is the wealth star, the idea is to nourish this star by putting in that part of the house, the fire element. The best way of course is to give that room a red or orange or purple color scheme. Enhancing the wealth star brings fortune to the residents living in the home.

Does this mean that we can use the color red anywhere in the home?

Apart from the auspicious star no.8, there are two other flying stars that are earth elements. They are the sickness star no. 2 and the harmful star no. 5. The danger in using red without knowing the exact location of all of these stars is that one might inadvertently activate the harmful stars to the detriment of the residents, since the fire element activates the harmful stars 2 an 5 as well.

Feng Shui colour red

One suggestion is to use the seek professional consultation on placement of the fire element in the home, or use the free information and calculator in http://tao-astrology.com to locate these stars yourself. It is a relatively simple process which you would only need a compass, the floor plan of your house and the date at which your house is built.

To those pressed for money and time, don’t use red in the home. Instead, use yellows and earth tones. This will support the wealth stars while sooth the harmful stars. Also, it will be a good investment to have a mechanical chiming clock installed that can be heard throughout the home. This clock should have a silver or gold pendulum, and its chime should be a metallic "ping" sound. This sound provides the metal element to drain the harmful effects of the inauspicious stars while refreshing the home environment every hour on the hour.

Have fun with Feng Shui and Good Luck.
