A Feng Shui Tip from E. J. Shaffert, Director of London School of Feng Shui
One of the things I love about teaching Feng Shui is watching people realise that their homes are not just sitting quietly in the background.
Our spaces are affecting us all the time.
They can lift us, calm us, inspire us — or, without us even noticing, they can slowly drain our energy.
When I lead workshops on Feng Shui, I sometimes show students a simple way to test this for themselves, by noticing how their body responds to different environmental conditions.
The approach is called kinesiology, and it uses muscle testing to observe how the body responds to different forms of stimulation.
And when students are faced with a cluttered, messy, or chaotic environment, guess what often happens?
They show a noticeable loss of muscle strength, energy, and mental focus.
You can try a simple version of this at home.
Stand in front of any area of your home that feels messy, cluttered, or neglected, and quietly notice your reaction.
Do you feel inspired and ready to take on the world?
Or does the thought of being in that space make you want to curl up and go to sleep?
Then go to a part of your home that feels organised, clear, and well cared for. Again, pause for a moment and notice how your body responds.
Can you feel a difference in your energy, wellbeing, and enthusiasm for life?
These reactions may seem subtle at first. One messy drawer, one cluttered corner, or one neglected pile of papers may not seem like such a big deal.
But this is where the accumulating effect comes in.
If your body and mind receive that small message of disorder every single day, the effect can build up over time. Little by little, the space may begin to feel heavier, and you may find yourself feeling more tired, distracted, or uninspired than you realise.
It may sound dramatic to say that a chaotic, disorganised interior can drain the life right out of us — but in a very real sense, it can.
So this week, begin to notice your own internal and energetic reactions to mess versus order.
Your home is always speaking to you. The question is: What is it saying?
And can you now see how you really are affected?
