A Feng Shui Tip from E. J. Shaffert, Director of London School of Feng Shui
And now, back to our conversation about clutter.
So, be honest: if you are bothered by any clutter at home or at the office, did you even try the 80/20 technique that I introduced last week?
If not, then why not?
If you think about it, any reasons for not trying a new approach are probably linked to the real reasons the clutter exists in the first place:
Overwhelm, exhaustion, and that feeling of being out of control… so we just give up.
If those qualities are present, you can simply recognise them, take a breath, and decide to move on from there.
Personally, I have found that the 80/20 approach works very well. But if you would like to try something different, here is another method.
This is called the Mount Vernon Method, because it is apparently the approach used by the staff who care for Mount Vernon, the former home of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
They begin at the front door — the Mouth of Chi, remember? — and then start cleaning in a clockwise direction, which is also the natural direction in which energy tends to move.
As they clean, they go through every nook, cranny, closet, drawer, and corner. And they do not move on until that area is organised and spotless.
Once they have finished the first room, they enter the next room and continue again in a clockwise direction.
At the end of the day, they make a note of where they stopped, and then begin again from that point the next morning.
Working in this way may seem slow, but it is certainly thorough. And once the whole house has been cleaned this way the first time, the clockwise cleaning of the rooms becomes much faster the next time around.
Personally, I have used this method when I felt that the entire place needed a deeper and more complete cleaning, and it really does make a difference.
It also gives me a wonderful sense of accomplishment, as I move in a clear, systematic cycle through the whole home.
If you like, try this approach in your own place this week — and let me know if you have any startling successes!
