A Feng Shui Tip from E. J. Shaffert, Director of London School of Feng Shui

You may have heard that in Feng Shui, toilets have a very bad reputation.  There are varying perspectives on this, so I thought I would try to clear the record on this, once and for all!

To start, in traditional China, toilets generally did have a bad reputation, as they were usually out houses with no running water, and typically not kept very clean.  Someone who had visited China not so long ago said it was not difficult to find a toilet, just follow your nose!

Of course, things are changing rapidly in China and elsewhere, and modern conveniences and standards of cleanliness are much more common.  But still the Feng Shui perspective is rarely positive about energetic influence of of toilets.

For example, it is considered very bad Feng Shui to have the door to a bathroom directly opposite the front door;  it is thought to be as if you are just flushing money down the toilet!

There are two reasons for this:   First, energetically, the flushing energy of the toilet is actually quite powerful, and you can imagine that the “chi” energy is rapidly pulled out of the home by it;  this is not something that you would want, when the new energy is just entering your home.

And, symbolically, the toilet represents the way that we rid the home of what we do not want, therefore, you would not want this to be the first thing that you see when you enter the space.

As a general tip, if your bathroom does face the entrance , it is best to keep the bathroom door closed.  You might also consider placing a mirror on the door, facing out, so that when the energy approaches the door to the toilet, it is reflected back.

These tips may sound a bit superstitious, but I tried this in a previous apartment of mine, which had the toilet directly facing the apartment entrance, and I found it changed the feeling of the entrance a great deal.
